Have you been wondering how to do the Mediterranean diet for PCOS? This podcast episode will go into detail on how to do just that! Skip ahead to 8 minutes in to get to the actual content (the first little bit is just updates and thank yous!)
A functional nutrition approach to the Mediterranean diet for PCOS involves combining the best approaches of PCOS nutrition like those I cover on this blog and the Mediterranean diet approaches. There is a lot of great evidence that the Mediterranean Diet is an effective tool for PCOS symptom management [Nutrients, 2019, PMID: 31547562]
The Mediterranean Diet generally focuses on a whole foods, anti-inflammatory diet approach that emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
The image below shows you an updated food pyramid that emphasizes extra protein for PCOS, a very important modification, along with other important foods to make the Mediterranean diet for pcos successful.
The Mediterranean diet as is (with it’s focus on fish, whole grains, fruits and veggies) is effective for PCOS management but my experience has been that too many whole grains and starches and not enough protein still slow or prevent progress with PCOS symptom management. Weight loss is included in this (as there are some special techniques for losing weight with PCOS as well as some key reasons you might struggle to lose weight with PCOS) but also other symptoms like PCOS facial hair, etc.
In this episode we will cover the Mediterranean diet generally as well as how you can apply a Mediterranean diet for PCOS, modifications you might want to make and more.
