What is PCOS?
PCOS is a complex metabolic and hormonal condition that affects nearly 15% of women worldwide. The main symptoms of PCOS are driven by excess androgens or “male” hormones like testosterone and DHEA. These extra androgens create the symptoms you’re familiar with like facial hair, hair loss, weight gain, acne, and more.
What are the three PCOS root causes or types?
PCOS has 3 main root causes that drive symptoms: insulin resistance, adrenal dysfunction, and chronic inflammation. You might have heard these described as the PCOS “types”. This is because PCOS is really a basket diagnosis where much is still murky and unknown. Lots of us have PCOS, but we all have different expressions.
What we do know is that PCOS is best managed through a change in nutrition and lifestyle approaches and as a functional nutrition professional and PCOS expert, I have made my life’s work providing resources for PCOS.
